Chamber Announces Lobbying Priorities

The list of lobbying priorities has been drawn up following extensive consultation with Chamber members at sector-specific forums, Members' Council meetings and networking events. It is in line with the British Chambers' of Commerce's Blueprint for Business Growth, which sets out the UK's business priorities such as improved infrastructure, breaking down barriers to growth and nurturing  trade and enterprise.

The key issues to be addressed in 2010 are as follows:

  • Promoting a growing economy and sustainable business climate
  • Ensuring public expenditure cuts do not adversely affect business and support for business is sustained
  • Ensuring business support is effective and focussed to meet local needs
  • Fighting against additional red tape and burdens to be placed on business
  • Highlighting the importance of international trade and helping business survive the pressures of operating in a global economy
  • Assisting local manufacturers and supply chains to develop innovative products and solutions to drive future economic growth
  • Ensure that graduates, school leavers and the unemployed are equipped with skills to meet future business needs or helped to start their own enterprises
  • Assisting businesses to reduce their energy costs; mitigate their environmental impacts and develop sustainable products to meet customer needs
  • Opening up more public procurement opportunities to local businesses and reducing the bureaucracy involved in these processes

Richard Wilkins, President of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, said: "The main role of the Chamber is to represent its members and address the issues that concern them the most and we will continue to lobby the new Government - of whichever party that may be - to ensure that the voice of Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire business is heard.

"The economy is barely limping towards recovery. It will only grow if businesses are successful and are encouraged to innovate, create new jobs, develop new products, access new customers and markets and invest in their future.

"The political decision-makers have a key role to play in supporting local businesses and encouraging them to flourish and grow and the Chamber will be campaigning hard throughout the year to break down barriers to business growth, rebuild the local business infrastructure and deliver jobs and prosperity through success."
