Organised by Startups.co.uk in conjunction with NatWest bank, the awards are open to all businesses less than three-years old, and employ fewer than 60 people. Start-ups can enter 13 categories, including Retailer of the year, Micro business of the year and Innovative business of the year. There is also a 'Silver fox' award for more mature entrepreneurs. The winners of each category will compete for the title 'Start-ups Awards 2005 Business of the Year' and a £5,000 prize. Applicants will be assessed on a range of criteria, including strategic planning, team-building effectiveness, overcoming barriers to success and visionary leadership. "Even if you don't win the top prize, entrants gain valuable advertising and the opportunity to rub shoulders with potential clients and business partners," said Dan Mathews, spokesman for Startups.co.uk. The closing date for entries is 11 July and the winner will be announced at an award ceremony in London on 21 October.
