Free Chamber Event To Explain Changes In Education

Posted on May 26th, 2010

An information seminar aimed at making more employers aware of schemes to ensure teenagers and young adults are ready for the workplace takes place on 18 June in Derby.

The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Derbyshire Education Business Partnership and the Nottinghamshire Education Business Alliance to arrange the free breakfast workshop, which is open to businesses in both counties.

The seminar takes place at the da Vinci Community College in Breadsall, between 8am and 10.30am. It will give employers the chance to understand the changes taking place within teenage education.

The need for the seminar was demonstrated by recent Chamber research, which revealed low awareness of the new 14-19 Diploma, which combines theoretical study with practical experience in specific areas of work.

The survey showed that just 29% of businesses are aware of the new qualification, compared with the 62% of businesses aware of national apprenticeships and 57% with knowledge about work placements.

Richard Wilkins, President of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, said: "It is a common complaint from employers that young people are not ready for the world of work. I can't stress enough how important it is for employers to understand how the changes in education can assist in providing young people with relevant skills to meet business needs."

"Having good-calibre young employees with relevant skills is critical to developing sustainable and successful businesses for the future, so it is vital for all businesses to take advantage of initiatives like the 14-19 Diploma to develop the skills to meet their future needs."
