Daniel Cartledge has been named ‘Young Chef of the Year’ at the annual Nottingham Restaurant Awards, held at Colwick Hall on 17th June.
Daniel was nominated for the award by his employer - Tonic Restaurant - whilst studying for an advanced apprenticeship in Professional Cookery at New College Nottingham (ncn). He competed against three other finalists in a head to head battle at ncn. Among the finalists were current ncn student Liam Pykett, and Nathaniel Tofan from Saltwater, who graduated from a catering course at the College before embarking on his career.
Daniel said: “Being named Young Chef of the Year will definitely help me in my future career and open up opportunities for me.”
The judging panel comprised four Michelin-starred chefs, including head judge Sat Bains of Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms. Daniel impressed the panel with his menu of line caught sea bass, asparagus & broad bean risotto with pea shoots, followed by chocolate Neapolitan with jam doughnuts.
This challenging but rewarding competition aims to recognise and reward talented young chefs in Nottinghamshire restaurants.
Adrian Pratt, ncn Director of Lifestyle comments: “The calibre of young chefs that enter the competition every year is extremely impressive, and it is rewarding to see current and past ncn students succeed. Sat Bains and I champion this award, with the focus on developing the next generation of potential Michelin star chefs.”
Fellow student Michael Ross narrowly missed the top spot in the new ‘Young Waiter/Waitress of the Year’ category, after an intense final at ncn. Michael was placed in the top three of the competition. - Ends –
