New College Nottingham (ncn) Foundation Degree Design student, Yui Waraporn’s sustainable design project ‘Second Life’ has won the Sky Award at the New Designers exhibition in London.
New Designers is an annual event that brings together the very best in UK graduate design, showcasing the work and talent of the next generation of designers. A range of disciplines were exhibited from architecture to animation, furniture to fashion and graphics to glass.
Yui was awarded a £500 cash prize and four week’s work experience in Sky Creative for her unique lamp which is made of 160 recycled water bottles and cable ties. Yui used her own personal upbringing and perspectives on sustainability to inspire her award-winning piece, highlighting the excessive consumption of western society today.
ncn Programme Area Manager for Art, Design and Fashion, Graham Burton, commented: “This is a remarkable achievement for the College as last year ncn student Rheannon Cummins won the same award. With over 3000 students exhibiting their work and only six awards up for grabs, the competition is very high. Designs from all the major universities were on show and to be recognised by a multi-national corporation for the work that we do is testament to the talent and commitment of our staff and students.”
