Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce is urging firms in both counties to put their views forward on proposals to create a new Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) at a special business consultation summit later this month.
The free event, open to companies on both ends of the A52, takes place at the University of Derby Enterprise Centre on 18 August.
The Chamber has organised the event following last week's announcement that the upper tier City and County Councils in both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire have formally agreed that creating a two- county LEP will be the best approach to ensure that business still receives the vital support, assistance and access to funding it requires in the wake of the government decision to axe the East Midlands Development Agency.
The four authorities - the City Councils in Nottingham and Derby City Councils and Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire County Councils - officially signed a Local Enterprise Partnership bid on Friday, after being invited to do so by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and Business Secretary Vince Cable.
The LEP will provide strategic leadership on establishing local economic priorities at a difficult time, with public expenditure cuts and the need to encourage the growth of the private sector necessary to exploit new market opportunities and technologies.
Richard Wilkins, President of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, said: "The Chamber's highest priority is to help build a powerful Local Enterprise Partnership which will not only maximise the benefit for businesses in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, but is also big enough to compete on a national scale.
"Now that we've got the political consensus to start work on creating a cross-county LEP, we need to garner as much support for the proposals as possible from the business sectors in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
"The event on the 18th will give business owners and representatives from both counties the opportunity to give their support and find out more about the LEP proposal and what this means for your business."
