According to the Department for Business Innovation & Skills Women make up 51% of the UK population and 47% of those active in the labour market, but are under represented in participation in enterprise and offer a wealth of untapped talent and economic opportunity. Just over a million women are self-employed, up by 17% since 2000. Despite this progress, the gap between male and female entrepreneurship in the UK remains stubbornly wide - men are still almost twice as likely to start businesses as women, and the gap is wider still for young women. If the UK matched US levels of female entrepreneurship, there would be 600,000 more businesses in the UK
So when you take into account that female entrepreneurs predominately juggle the roles of wife, mother, secretary and business owner pretty much single handedly, how do they manage to keep all the balls in the air and how do they keep themselves going when they feel in danger of dropping a few?
Through a mix of Inspiring speakers, informal networking opportunities and a glass of wine or two, we hope that our series of Enterprising Women events will encourage local business women and help you build a strong network of successful women with fantastic knowledge to share.
These events are not just for self employed women; these events are designed to encourage all women in business at any level to broaden their knowledge and their network of contacts.
Previous speakers at The Enterprising Women events have been Rachel Elnaugh, former ‘Dragon' from Dragon's Den, Hilary Devey, The Business Inspector, CEO of Pall-Ex and newest Dragon, Michelle Feeney, CEO of St Tropez and former senior manager with Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Fothergill, CEO of Pennine Healthcare, Kate Hull Rodgers Award winning playwright and comedienne, Jasvinder Sanghera Founder of Karma Nirvana and many others.
